Can ChatGPT build your website? What AI can and can't do

Yes, ChatGPT can write the code for a simple website. Here is what it does well, where it fails, and when an AI-built site is enough for a small business.

Yes, ChatGPT can create a simple website: it writes the HTML, CSS and text for a page in minutes, and tools built on AI can even publish it. What it cannot do is find out what your customers need to hear, decide what makes you different, or take care of hosting, legal pages, SEO and updates. For a quick placeholder, AI is enough. For a website that should bring enquiries, AI is a fast tool in the hands of someone who knows what to build.

What ChatGPT and other AI tools can do today

  • Write the code for a page. Describe a layout and you get working HTML and CSS. For a one-page site, the result can look neat.
  • Draft copy. Headlines, service descriptions and FAQs in seconds, in several languages.
  • Suggest structure. Ask which pages a bakery or a physiotherapy practice needs and you get a sensible list.
  • Fix and explain. Paste an error message or a piece of code and it explains what is wrong.
  • Build complete sites with AI builders. Tools like Wix’s AI site builder, Framer AI or Durable generate a full site from a short description.

Where it falls short

It knows the average, not your business

AI writes from patterns. Ask for a website for a dentist in Vienna and you get the average of all dental websites: friendly team, modern equipment, your smile matters. That is exactly what your competitors already say, so visitors compare you on price. AI does not know that your patients choose you for evening appointments or that they are afraid of hidden costs. That knowledge comes from talking to you and your customers.

Code is not a website

ChatGPT gives you files. You still need a domain, hosting, SSL, a working contact form, analytics with cookie consent, an Impressum and a privacy policy (both required in Austria), and a way to update texts without touching code. Each step is solvable, but each takes time and knowledge.

It makes confident mistakes

AI can invent facts, use outdated code or write forms that look fine but never send an email. If you cannot check the result, you will not notice until a customer tells you, or never.

It does not take responsibility

When the website brings no enquiries, AI will not find out why. Someone has to look at the data, talk to customers and change the page.

When an AI-built website is enough

  • You are testing a business idea and need something online this week.
  • You need a simple page with your contact details and opening hours.
  • You are comfortable checking code, forms and legal pages yourself.

When you need more than AI

  • The website should bring enquiries, bookings or sales every month.
  • You compete with businesses that offer something similar.
  • You need several languages, a booking system or SEO for several services.

How we use AI ourselves

We use AI every day for code, image preparation, translations and quality checks, which makes our projects faster and more affordable. Some of our websites are AI-assisted custom builds. What AI does not do in our process is decide what your website says. That still starts with a 60–90 minute interview and an analysis of your competitors. More on this in is AI replacing web designers?

Proof from a real project

Jenergy, a solar business in Melbourne, went live with a new Webflow website in three weeks. Tools made it fast. The part that made people trust a high-value purchase came from research: restructuring complex installation information into a flow that answers buyers’ doubts in the right order.

Our opinion

Try it. Ask ChatGPT to draft your homepage, and you will learn what your website needs to say. Then decide whether you want to finish it yourself or have someone turn it into a website that wins customers.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT actually create a website?

Yes. ChatGPT can write the code and text for a simple website. You still need to host it, connect a domain, set up forms, add legal pages and check that everything works.

Is an AI-generated website good enough for a small business?

For a placeholder or a test, yes. For a website that should bring regular enquiries, usually not, because AI produces generic copy and structure that look like many competitors.

What is the best AI website builder?

Wix, Framer and Durable all offer AI site generation. They are fast for a first draft. Choose the one whose editor you find easiest, because you will do the improvements yourself.

Will AI replace web design agencies?

AI is replacing much of the manual production work. The strategic part, understanding customers and deciding what a website says, still needs a person. Agencies that use AI well become faster and better value.
