Is AI replacing web designers? An honest answer from a designer

What AI can already do in web design, what still needs a person, and what it means for small businesses planning a website in 2026.

No, AI is not replacing web designers, but it is replacing a large part of their manual work. AI can now produce layouts, code and first drafts of copy in minutes. It cannot find out why your customers choose you, decide what your website should say first, or take responsibility for whether the site brings enquiries. That part is still the job of a person.

We use AI tools every day, so here is what we see in practice.

What AI already does well

  • Code. AI writes clean front-end code fast. Some of our websites are built as AI-assisted custom websites, which makes custom features affordable for small budgets.
  • First drafts. AI produces a first version of a layout, a list of headline options or a draft paragraph in seconds.
  • Images and variations. AI can generate illustrations, background images and many design variations to choose from.
  • Repetitive tasks. Resizing images, writing alt texts, translating pages and checking for broken links take minutes instead of hours.

For a small business, this is good news. The same budget now buys more: more pages, more languages, more testing.

What AI cannot do

  • Interview your customers. AI does not know that your clients choose you because you call back within an hour, or that they worry about hidden costs. That knowledge comes from talking to you and reading what your customers write.
  • Decide what matters most. A website has a few seconds to convince a visitor. Deciding which three messages come first, and which ten to leave out, is a judgement about your business, not a technical task.
  • Stand out. AI learns from what already exists. Ask it for a website for a dental practice in Vienna, and you get the average of every dental website it has seen. That is exactly what makes customers compare you on price.
  • Take responsibility. If the website brings no enquiries, someone has to find out why and fix it. AI does not care about your results.

What this means if you are planning a website

  1. Expect faster delivery and better value. A professional multi-page website now takes about 30 days, not three months. If an agency quotes you a long timeline, ask why.
  2. Pay for thinking, not for pixels. The valuable part of web design is the research, the structure and the copy. Ask any agency how it decides what your website says.
  3. Be careful with “AI website in 5 minutes” tools. They are fine for a quick placeholder. They produce generic sites that look like many others, and that rarely bring enquiries.

How we use AI in our own process

We use AI where it saves time without lowering quality: for code, image preparation, translations, and checking our work. We do not use it to decide what your website says. Every project still starts with a 60–90 minute interview and an analysis of up to 10 competitors, and every headline is written for your specific customers. You can see the full process here.

The result: Jenergy, a solar business in Melbourne, went from a website that brought no leads to a new site that went live in three weeks. The speed came from tools. The structure that answers the doubts people have before a high-trust purchase like solar panels came from research.

Is web design still worth it in 2026?

Yes, but the job has changed. Web design is less about drawing screens and more about understanding a business and its customers. Designers who only produce layouts will struggle, because AI does that cheaply. Designers who combine research, copy and conversion with fast AI-supported production are worth more than before.

Our opinion

Use AI, and expect your agency to use it too. But do not let it decide what your business says to its customers. The websites that bring enquiries in 2026 are the ones that sound like one specific business, not like the average of the internet.

FAQ

Is AI replacing web design?

No. AI is taking over much of the manual production work, like code and first layouts. The strategic part of web design, understanding customers and deciding what a website should say and in which order, still needs a person.

Is web design still worth it in 2026?

Yes. Websites are built faster and cheaper with AI, but a website that brings enquiries still needs research, structure and copy written for a specific audience. That is where the value of web design is moving.

Can AI build a website for my business?

AI tools can build a simple website in minutes. It will look like many others and is fine as a placeholder. For a website that should bring enquiries, you still need someone to work out what your customers need to read.

Do you use AI to build websites?

Yes, for code, images, translations and quality checks. We do not use AI to decide what your website says. Every project starts with an interview and competitor research.
