Agency vs freelancer vs DIY website builder: which is right for you?

Should you hire a web design agency, a freelancer or build the website yourself? Costs, timelines, risks and a simple decision matrix for small businesses.

Build the website yourself if your budget is under €1,000 and you mainly need to be found. Hire a freelancer if you have a clear brief and the time to manage the project. Hire an agency if the website has to bring enquiries and you want one partner responsible for research, copy, design and launch. The right choice depends less on price than on how much of the thinking you want to do yourself.

The three options compared

DIY builder Freelancer Agency
Typical cost €200–€600 per year €800–€4,000 €1,500–€10,000+
Your time 30–60 hours 10–20 hours 3–6 hours
Time to launch 1–4 weekends 3–8 weeks 2–8 weeks
Research and strategy You Rarely Usually included
Copywriting You Sometimes Often included
Risk if something goes wrong All yours One person A team and a contract

The ranges are typical for small business websites in Austria and Germany. Agency prices vary most, so always compare what is included.

DIY builder: cheapest in money, most expensive in time

Wix, Squarespace and similar builders let you publish a website in a weekend. It is a sensible choice when you are testing an idea, have very little budget or only need opening hours and a phone number online.

The hidden cost is your time and the result. You decide the structure, write every word and choose the photos. Most self-built sites look tidy and say very little, because writing about your own business is hard. We compared the running costs in Wix vs Squarespace vs Shopify vs a custom website.

Freelancer: flexible and personal, with more management

A good freelancer can deliver excellent work for less than an agency, and you work directly with the person doing the job. Freelancers are a strong choice for a clear, well-defined task: a redesign of an existing site, a landing page or technical fixes.

The risks: one person rarely covers strategy, copy, design, development and SEO equally well, so you may need to fill the gaps yourself. If the freelancer gets ill, busy or leaves, the project stops. Ask who owns the files, the domain and the logins before you start.

Agency: one partner for the whole result

An agency costs more because it takes over more: research into your customers and competitors, structure, copy, design, build, launch and support. You spend a few hours in calls instead of weeks of work. For a business that depends on enquiries, that difference often pays back quickly.

Not every agency works the same way. Large agencies have high overheads and long timelines. Small, specialised agencies like ours keep prices closer to freelancer rates while still offering a fixed process. With us, a landing page starts at €1,500 and a multi-page website at €3,500, all with a fixed price and about 3 hours of your time in total. See what each package includes.

A simple decision matrix

Answer these four questions:

  1. Budget under €1,000? Start with a builder and do it well.
  2. Do you have a written brief, your own copy and photos? A freelancer can build it efficiently.
  3. Should the site bring regular enquiries in a competitive market? Choose an agency that starts with research.
  4. Do you plan to grow, add services, languages or SEO? Choose a partner who can stay with you after launch: an agency or a freelancer with a team behind them.

If you answered yes to 3 or 4, the cheapest option at the start is usually not the cheapest after a year.

Questions to ask whoever you choose

  • Who writes the copy, and how do you decide what the website says?
  • Can I see two or three websites you built, and their results?
  • Who owns the domain, the files and the admin access?
  • What exactly is included in the price, and what costs extra?
  • What happens after launch, and how fast do you reply?

We go deeper on this in how to choose a web design agency in Austria.

Proof from a real project

Lashboss Online, a lash-training business, had no brand, no platform and no way to sell online. A freelancer could have built the landing page. The business needed a brand identity, a sales page with several packages and a course platform, all at once. We delivered all three on Tilda in four weeks.

Our opinion

Do it yourself when you are testing an idea. Hire a freelancer when you know exactly what you need. Hire an agency when you want someone to work out what you need, and to be responsible for the result.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer is usually cheaper per project. An agency costs more but typically includes research, copy and a team, so you spend less of your own time and depend less on one person.

Should I build my own website or hire a professional?

Build it yourself if you are testing an idea or need only basic information online. Hire a professional when the website should bring enquiries regularly or you compete with businesses that look similar to yours.

What does a web design agency do that a freelancer does not?

An agency usually covers the whole chain: research, strategy, copy, design, development, SEO and support, with a fixed process and backup if someone is unavailable. Many freelancers focus on design or development only.

How much time do I need for a website project?

Building it yourself takes 30–60 hours. With a freelancer, expect 10–20 hours of briefing, feedback and content. With an agency like ours, about 3 hours in total for most projects.
